Laurie Cansdale died on 28 November, aged 75, after five years of living with a succession of types of lymphoma. Laurie had been a ringer here since 1995.
Pioneering treatment and excellent care at Barts Hospital gave him a few more years of reasonable health in which to enjoy time with family and friends, holidays with Sally, and recently their ruby wedding anniversary.
The end of his life was made more comfortable by a month spent in Farleigh Hospice, followed by six weeks in Cherry Wood Grange Care Home, where he died. In both places the extraordinary staff cared for him with compassion, dedication, and friendly good humour.
A celebration of his life was held in All Saints Church, Writtle on Friday 14th December.

ROLL OF HONOUR Updated - 11 men and one woman killed in action added to the Roll of Honour up to the end of 1919. This brings a total of 64 men and one woman from the village killed in World War I. It is our intention that a quarter peal will be rung on or around the date of their death to mark the ultimate sacrifice made by these local men and women.
